Canto XXX of the purgatory
The apparition of Jeanne in the terrestrial Paradise.
Do not cry, Marco my Lover.
RETURN TO THE PORTAL OF PURGATORY
A Lady appeared to me, dressed in blue, who shone like an ardent flame. I suddenly felt reborn in me the love, which had struck me, still young, whereas that, dressed with a coat of steel mesh and such as an Amazon with fragile members, she shone among the men-at-arms. At this time I knew that, behind this hymen in the shape of a steel armour, she was capable of love and that I would be her lover. I turned towards my guide and I tell him: "I quivered of all the blood that I carry in me, I recognize there, the features of my old flame!" But Baudelaire was no more there and I poured tears to have to quit him thus. "Do not cry, Marco My Lover, do not cry now because your Mentor went away from here; it is for an other wound that you must preserve your tears." When I turned around to the call of my name, on the left side of the chariot, I saw a lady, who had initially appeared veiled to me, carry her glances towards me on this side of the river. Although the veil whom she wore did not let her seen well, with a decided and proud voice, and with a reproachful tone, she said to me: "Look well at me, my very dear Marco! Oh yes, I am well Your Jeanne as you see it! How did you have the audacity to come up to here? Didn't you thus know that here, man is happy?" I lowered my eyes with shame. She appeared to me without kindness, like the son believes his mother is, and I let go some tears, believing to have offended her. And I heard the angels sing: "In Te, Domine, speravi." "Lady, why to overwhelm him like so, him who is without defense in front of the power of your Beauty?" I dried my tears and I retained my wispers, in front of the song of the adorable the child-angels who had thus takenme in pity. Then, without leaving the side of the chariot where she was and turning herself toward the child-angels, she says to them: "You, satisfy yourselves to take care of the angels of Heaven; me, I want to be made heard from whom who cries over there, so that the punishment, be at the the measure of his faults. This one, at the time of his adolescence, had received everything which can predisposed him to a promising future: Born in a favorable conjuncture, under the sign of the Virgin, the providential attention of the Virgin Mary and the abundance of the divine graces. But, in the absence of culture and if we sow there, bad seed, how the soil cannot remain wild! During a time, I supported him of my sight by showing him my beautiful eyes of pure girl, and I direct him with me in the right way. As soon as, by the fire, I quit this mortal life, he drew me aside from his dreams and he gave himself to others still available, she-wolves on whom he swarmed without loving. When the spirit in me, took over the flesh and that beauty and virtue increased in me, I became less dear and less pleasant to him. And he directed his steps in paths of error, while following false images of the good, which hold none of their promises. And it was useless for me, in dream or in a vigil state, to inspire him and to advise him, so much ihe worried little about it.He fell so low that all the means were impotent to save him, except that to show him the dwelling of the damned ones. It is the reason why, I crossed the door of the deaths and that I addressed by crying, my prayers to Whom who led him up tol me. The supreme decrees of God would be violated if one could pass the Lethe and taste to this water, without paying any tribute which makes run tears of repentance."
