Canto XVI of the
The despotic power of the secular clericalism.
Laws exists, but who worries at making them respected?
RETURN TO THE PORTAL OF PURGATORY
Blackness of hell, a smoke then covered us, which closed our eyes, and my guide offered me his shoulder as if I was a blind man. "You, who are you, who goes across our smoke and who speaks about us as if you still shared the time which lasts little time?" Thus spoke to us, one of these voices. And I answered to him: "I am going up there with my envelope which is dissolved by death, and I came here through the anguishes of hell; since God accomodated me so well in His grace, that he wants me to see His court in a way unknown to our time, do not hide to me, who you where before your death, but tell it to me and tell me if I go in the right passage; let your words serves us as guide." "Nothing will tell you, neither my name nor the place from where I came; I could be anyone, from anywhere. To go up higher, you are in the good way." And he added: "Brother, you who comes from below, tell me that the world is blind!" And another retorted: "You the livings, allot only to heaven, all the causes, as if all was necessarily carried along with it. If it were thus so, free will would not exist in you and, it would not be right, that the good gives us joy and evil, suffering. Heaven is the principle which directs all your movements; he bequeathed you a light to distinguish between the good and the evil, as well as the free will which, in spite of the sorrow of the first falls, finally carries it against heaven if it is well fed. Free, you are subjected to a larger force, to a better nature which creates in you the reasonable soul, on which heaven does not have control any more. If then, the current world is delinquent, it is necessary to seek the cause in yourself, and I will give you some irrefutable evidences of that. As a young girl who gamble with herself, at the manner of the children, by crying and laughing, tastes to the savour of mediocre goods, she is mistaken by it and run to their pursuit and always wants more of it, if a guide or a brake does not divert her from her love. Our soul leaves that way, very innocent from the hand of Whom who delights Himself in her before she has been, she knows nothing if not that, engendered from a Creator who is the perfect joy. Also, there is need for laws to be used as restraint, and a king to recognize the justice of the city. Laws exists, but who worries at making them respected? Nobody, because whom who goes at the head of the herd, ruminates, but does not respect them himself, also the crowd which sees her guide using of the false goods of which it is avid itself, feed itself from it and does not seek further. You can thus see that, it is because he is badly governed that the world became malicious, and not because your nature is corrupted. The world must have two suns to enlight him, that of the Earth and that of Heaven, if one of them dies out at the profit of the other, one and the other, together, must necessarily go bad, because being connected, one does not fear any more the other. Thus, the civil state which combines the two powers in oneself, falls into mud and soils itself as of its charge." And thus, I answered to this voluble soul: "I understand better now why, in the world that I left, these are not,any more, the moral laws which dictates to the masses, the impact of their acts, but the thundering fanfare of the groupuscules representing the emerging power of a secular clericalism; they profess their licence, their debauch and their decline and disturb the spirit of the civil power, by their parades, their signs, their fanfare and their morals of new clericals, so that pleasure replaces love, that euthanasy supplants the birth, that plunder replaces probity, that violence supplants persuasion and that Satan controls finally. See the clearness, that radiates through smoke, already bleaching ; the angel is here, before he does appear, it is necessary for me to leave." On these words, he turned back and no more did he want to hear me.
