Canto IX of the Purgatory
From the Antipurgatory to the Purgatory.
RETURN TO THE PORTAL OF PURGATORY
When I was overcomed by sleep, I layed myself on the grass where we where all seated. In the morning before the awakening, at the hour when our spirit is full of visions far away from divine but closer to carnal visions, it seemed to me to see flying in the sky, with opened wings, an angel of heaven, a female angel, like the one already seen and who was very beautiful. She abducted me and I left lying on Her, in an astral flight without destination nor real reason, and, oh happiness, pushed by a carnal impulse, I spill myself in Her! I woke up with a start, my Master was close to me, I did not recognize any more the place, without knowing it, I had been moved away. And my Master says to me: "I see that your sleep was disturbed and that you released fertile gametes, I do not hold rigour to you. Do not have fear, you are in the purgatory. At dawn, when your soul was still sleeping, a lady came, who was martyrdom and especially virgin, and She says to me: "I am Lucie and Sanctified, I beg you, to let me take that one who sleep like so, I will facilitate his voyage". She carried you to depose you in front of this door, and Her eyes were so beautiful that I could not say, what else she did to you that I am not aware of, and which had given you, such an overflowing of pleasure. Then She went away at the same time as your sleep. I believe that you are blessed by the beautiful Ladies of Heaven." Then, we climbed up the cliff and we arrived facing a door, in front of which was standing a doorkeeper whose face was full of glare, her body, naked and blue like the sky and which floated in transparent gauzes. She carried in her hand, a naked sword which reflected its rays towards us; she was seating on the highest step of a porch which counted three degrees. She challenged us as follows: "Who are you and what do you want and do you not fear, having to regret to have come up to here?" And my Master answered her: "A Lady of Heavan, who knows well the question, said to us what to do to reach the way of the Good." And my Master told me to kiss Her lips, which I did timidly, then She closed Her mouth. And She opened the sacred door while saying: "Take care not to look behind under penalty of coming back and to have to repeat the exercise." When the doors opened, I heard strange sounds. I turned myself, attentive to the first notes, and it seemed to me I was hearing, sung by voices mixed with a soft music: "Te Deum laudamus: Te Dominum confitémur. Te aetérnum Patrem omnis terra veneratur. Tibi omnes Angeli, tibi Coeli et univérsae Potestates, Tibi Chérubim et Séraphim incessabili voce proclamant: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth."
