Canto VIII of Hell
Phlégias and the city whose name is Dite.
Who thus, prohibits me, the access of the dolentes dwellings?
I tell you that, well before we were at the foot of the high tower, my eyes looked to its summit and I saw two small flames landing there, to which, by far and unperceivable to the eye, another one answered. I turned towards the one to whom nothing was secret and I asked him: "What are those fires, what is their meaning and who sends them to us?" My guide answered to me: "Look at the water of the mud pit, and you will be able to discover there, what awaits us, if the fog does not cover it already." I saw approaching towards us, a small boat which split the air as quickly as an arrow, it was guided by a pilot who shouted: "Here you are finally, soul full of felony!" "Phlegias, Phlegias, this time you shout in vain, you will only have us to cross the mud pit." said my lord. Phlegias refrained his anger; he seemed afflicted to lose a soul thus. My guide went down in the boat, then made me enter after him; it appeared charged to me only when I was inside. While we sail on this dead sea, in front of me, drew up one damned women full of mud who says to me: "Who are you, you who come before your hour has come, passing by the cliff in the shade of Cap-Chat?" And I answered to this wretched creature: "You who has such a wretched aspect and who cries like this, tell me who you are before I leave you in your pain and your tears? If I come, I am only passing by and I do not remain in these muddy places." He raise the chest from the mud pit and surrounded my neck with his arms, then kissed me in the face saying to me: "Proud soul, blessed is the one who carried you in her belly. The one you see was on earth a proud she-cat; no act of virtue decorates my memory; also my shadow is here, full of fury. How many up there, pretend today of being great judges, who judged the whore and her customer and who came to fornicate in my couch? They will be here like pigs in mud, leaving from themselves only a horrible content!" I was inconvenienced and I was satisfied to see it regress in the bubble before we leave the lagoon, drawn by the crowd from the mud pit who inflicted to him, a treatment which cannot be praised, only in such a contemptible den of iniquity; all shouted: "Search for Lilly the Whore" And they precipitated on her: males, females and animals all at the same time, penetrating her, whipping her, raping her; it was like an orgy mass which they accepted in extasy and pain, so that I closed my eyes and that I cannot speak more without dazzle my chaste reader. Then I heard my Master saying to me: "Look my son, we approach the city which bears the name of Dite, with its population of numerous tormented." I said then: "Master, I distinguish already, the cape which scintillates like a diamond, and the gray walls which defend it, they appear impregnable to me; and these bell-towers, these palisades and these castles in ruins all as sinister the ones and the others." We arrived at the locality, the "Anse au Foulon" and the pilot howled us to go down. I saw, under the doors of the city, thousands of demons, precipitated from the cliff and which said raging: "Who thus is that one who, without having known death, go by the kingdom of the deaths?" And my wise Master made them a sign which showed that he wanted to speak to them in secrecy. They then calmed down and said: "Come alone and that that one, who had the audacity to enter this kingdom, goes away. Let him go alone by the road of his insane escapade and let him find by himself his way out if he can; but you who guided him by these obscure regions, you are invited to the Bunker of the Master of these places." "Oh my dear guide, who more than seven times gave me back the security and drew me from the terrible dangers which threatened me, do not abandon me in this distress; and if it is refused to us to go further, quickly let us find together the traces of our steps." And he answered to me: "Do not fear, there is nobody who can prevent us from passing, because too Powerful is The One who allowed it to us; but wait here for me; hope and comforts your faint spirit, because I will not leave you in this abyss." Thus he goes away, my soft father and he abandon me me there, in the doubt and in the fear. The heavy Dauphine door covered with iron, closed itself to the nose of my lord, who turned back towards me in slow steps. His eyes lowered, he had lost all its confidenc and he is said to himself: "Who thus, prohibits me, the access of the dolentes dwellings?" Then addressing himself to me: "You, do not be worry for what I irritate myself, because I will overcome this difficulty, whatever the defense which they prepare. Their arrogance is not new, because they showed it to me, at this other door where you have seen the letters of death. There, couldn't they prohibit the access to Christ, in his way towards the Limbs? A little further, by going up the slope, I know that a mysterious creature will come to open the door of the city to us."
